ATV's and Hunting
Hunting with ATVs is becoming more and more popular among hunters for many reasons. ATVs provide easy access to locations that are hard to get to by using trails that are impassable for a truck. ATVs are also used to haul materials and supplies, such as tree stands, into isolated areas. Another good use for ATVs when hunting is transporting harvested game back to your vehicle after a hunt. Another important factor to consider when hunting with an ATV is safety. Proper equipment is critical when riding an ATV to protect yourself against falling, flying debris and contact with foliage. It is strongly recommended to have protection for your head, eyes, hands and feet.

Wearing a helmet provides full coverage for you head and will protect you against injury. In addition a helmet will block wind, noise, cold and any flying objects. Goggles should be worn outside your helmet to protect your eyes from flying debris and dust you encounter when riding. Tinted goggles are also available to help block the sun. Wearing a long sleeve shirt or jacket and long pants will protect you from abrasions, sunburns, windburn and hypothermia. Specially designed ATV gloves are made to protect your hands from any flying debris, but they also help create a more secure grip on the ATV. The last important piece of equipment is proper boots, which will provide you with the best grip on footrests and protect your feet and ankles from injuries.
ATVs are very beneficial, but it is important to use them appropriately. Before hunting with your ATV, make sure you research the rules and regulations for the area you will be hunting in.
When choosing an ATV for hunting there is a variety of brands to choose from. Within each brand there is a variety of different models to consider. ATVs can range anywhere from $1,500 to more than $11,000. It is important to carefully look into the different specs of all the various machines.
- Travel responsibly: stay on roads and trails that are designated for ATVs.
- Moderate the throttle and use the clutch in wet conditions to have the most traction.
- Avoid widening roads by driving over all obstacles instead of going around them.
- Only cross streams at the designated spot.
- Follow all signs and barriers.
- When recovering game, take the road that will get you as close as you can to your game and then walk the rest of the way.
- Never ride with a loaded firearm; Make sure your firearm is secured in a separate case from your ammunition.
- Be respectful of private property and all other people on the trail.Only take a shot if you can clearly see the animal and you know what is between you and the target and beyond your target.
- Never shoot across a trail, road or waterway.
- Leave all gates the way you found them.
- Never cross private property without receiving permission.
- Always yield the right of way to riders going uphill and others that are passing you, which include other ATV riders, bikers, hikers and horses.
- When passing groups of people and camping areas reduce your speed.
- Before going out on your ATV research the area and find out all rules and regulations.
- Dress appropriately with layers and the necessary safety gear, which includes a helmet, eye protection and depending on where you are hunting this may also include Hunter Orange.
- Never travel alone, always travel with other hunters.Check your vehicle before leaving on a trip. Always carry tools and supplies in case your vehicle breaks down.
- Protect wildlife by avoiding meadows, lake shores, wetlands and streams unless they are along a designated route.
