2009 Can-Am DS 450 EFI

When BRP re-introduced the world to the name Can-Am over a year ago, it was not just a clever marketing scheme. When the company first entered the world of 2 wheel motocross in the early 1970's, they achieved overnight success with the domination of the 1974 American motocross championships. Now some 30 plus years later, they're at it again. But this time they're doing it on all fours. Re-introducing the lightest, most powerful, most technologically advanced sport quad on the market today: the Can-Am DS 450 EFI.

At the heart of this machine is a quick-revving, Rotax 449cc electronic fuel injected power plant. Although this single cylinder engines' dual overhead cam top end has DNA from the Rotax V990, which powers the Aprilia RSV1000R sport bike and the Can-Am Spyder, the bottom end, including the clutch and transmission, are specifically designed for the rigors of off-road riding. Feeding the engine is a sophisticated EFI system which optimizes performance at every RPM, while compensating for both temperature and altitude. This gives the rider smooth, instant throttle response.

One of the most noticeable unique features of the DS is the Altec aluminum frame. This computer optimized design uses aerospace grade aluminum to construct the dual pyramidal frame. This makes the DS exceptionally strong and lightweight.

What really makes the DS 450 stand out in the crowd is the ingenious positioning of suspension points and ground breaking front end geometry. The R-type double a-arm front suspension provides razor sharp handling and remarkable bump absorption. Aiding in these strong points are aluminum bodied HPG (high pressure gas) shocks complete with rebound and compression adjustments. That allows almost any rider to quickly and accurately calibrate the suspension to any riding style and environment.

Not only do the Wilwood inverted front dual-piston calipers provide phenomenal stopping power, but this desi
